Three incidents were reported at Warrent Street, Shepherd's Bush and Oval tube stations and one on a number 26 bus in Hackney Road in East London. All devices appear to have been detonators only and have not caused severe harm.
The University of London Hospital has been cordoned off after a security alert also.
Met Police chief Sir Ian Blair calls it a "serious incident". He appealed to Londoners to stay where they were and said the transport system was effectively being shut down.
